These poems were inspired by the situation in Syria and the plight of the migrants fleeing to Europe.

CEASEFIRE REPORT
February 2016

All is calm in Aleppo
No one in the streets -
There are no streets.
People have left Aleppo,
Their lives in their pockets
Their map a memory.
For those that remain,
A few targeted rockets
Should they fight again.
Anyway, under the rubble
All is still in Aleppo
For the ceasefire.

FITTING IN

Don’t wear a hijab
Don’t show your cross
It’s called integration
It won’t be your loss

IN TRANSIT

Unaccompanied child,
Come this way,
There is a new country
Who’ll take you today.
The offer’s for children
Who travel alone,
Away from this camp
That is your present home.
The 25,000 you’re leaving behind
- They will be fed.
Fish?  Dear lord, I don’t know,
But rice yes, and bread.

GREEK ISLANDS

Spend Easter in the Greek Islands -
Not that one.
Visit the mainland and discover ancient treasures -
Not that one
Enjoy the services of a guide throughout -
Not that one
Swim in the shimmering blue sea -
Not that way

Delight in the setting sun on the horizon
Creating happy memories that will last forever!

‘Not suited to migrants’

 UNDER AGE

When asked your age,
It might be worth the cost
Now your papers are lost
To stay under 16

With the past on your shoulders
And feeling much older,
To get nearer your dream
Please, stay under 16

Be not woman or man,
Though I know that you can,
To further your dream,
Stay under 16

Paperless -
Not yet digitalised,
Nationless –
Not yet legitimised,
Believe in the in between, you must,
But, stay under 16
CAMP INTERVIEW

Hello little child of 4
You are here with your family,
Can you tell me more?

I play with my sister,
Just talking, just walking
But not as it was before.
I want to go back to Syria,
Find the doll I hid in a drawer.

3 CLUES

A wanderer, homeless, afraid
Who am I?
A scavenger
Her life mislaid
Who am I?
And yes, in Syria
I was made.
Who am I?

CONDITIONS

To prevent unfair trade
By overseas gangsters
Rules have been made
For Syrian hamsters
Who sleep in limbo
In sawdust and paper
Then run round in circles
A little bit later
Consider then carefully
and then, if you please,
Agree to protect them
From fear and disease
Allow them the right to
Behave as they do
When taking them in from
The Syrian zoo
LANGUAGE LESSON

 Stay here
Don’t go there
Take that
Go back
Eat this
Reminisce
Take heart
New start

THE OTHER PLACE SPEECH

This House surely applauds
The noble Lord
Who says we can find ways and means
To take these children
From abroad
And would amend intended legislation -
From the other place
And recommend a plan
Without delay
For parties on reception day.

WASHED UP

A washed up thing
not yet in a grave,
the dinghy too thin,
 too many to save.
A perfectly formed
first cycle of life.
A washed up thing
escaping from strife.
