Don't Speak
‘Don’t Speak’ describes two states of mind. In the first, all hope seems lost and nature appears to reflect this. The second shows that depression can be overcome and reversed by the wonders around us.
Don’t speak!
The willow will speak for you
Don’t weep!
For you the river flows
Don’t speak!
The world is there before you
In peace,
More than you may suppose
Though the cold will settle in the night
Though the stars will hide away from sight
No words
Can tell a broken story
No nectar
Mend a broken chain
No answer
Come to reassure you
When your tears
Keep falling with the rain
Below the seas
The pearly seashells lie
In the dark
The amber lanterns shine
In trodden grasses
Sits a nesting lark
Her spirit holds a gift of time.
Don’t speak!
The willow will speak for you
Don’t weep
For you the earth unfolds
Don’t speak and
Hear a flower growing
The sun is
Piercing frozen snows
Though cold creeps in at dead of night
Though stars can hide themselves from sight:
Don’t speak!
The willow will speak for you
Don’t weep!
For you the river flows
Don’t speak!
The world is there before you
In peace,
More than you may suppose
Though the cold will settle in the night
Though the stars will hide away from sight
No words
Can tell a broken story
No nectar
Mend a broken chain
No answer
Come to reassure you
When your tears
Keep falling with the rain
Below the seas
The pearly seashells lie
In the dark
The amber lanterns shine
In trodden grasses
Sits a nesting lark
Her spirit holds a gift of time.

Don’t weep
For you the earth unfolds
Don’t speak and

Don’t speak!
