It was the discovery of the accordion some years ago which led Vanessa Young to move from poetry to song-writing. Whenever she picked up the accordion, she found herself led to explore the possibilities the instrument offered for composition.

Previously, poetry had been her main focus, earning praise for its lyrical quality. Among her prizes, she was especially pleased to have a commendation from the celebrated Indian poet, Daljit Nagra.

When she turned to music, she blended her interest in the universal themes of love and nature with lyrics inspired by the local Dorset landscape and the ever-present sound of the sea. Her work has been sung and appreciated by a number of choirs and has also been adapted for solo voice and various instruments.

Vanessa studied at University College London, Goldsmiths College  and Birkbeck College. She taught English as a Foreign Language and adult literacy for many years in inner London, before returning to her Dorset roots where her inspiration flourished.  A Drop in the Fountain was the title of one of the early songs where she fused lyrics with melody and harmony.
